SPR Publishes Syracuse Law Review Article on Environmental Justice Amendment to SEQRA
In July 2023, SPR attorneys Mark Chertok, Aaron Goldman, and Ahlia Bethea co-authored the firm’s annual update to its Syracuse Law Journal article: “Developments in the Law of SEQRA.” SPR attorneys have authored this yearly article since 2009.
The article provides an overview of legislative and case law developments concerning the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) for 2022 and early 2023. Most notably, passage of NY Senate Bill 8830 (SB 8830) represents a crucial step in integrating environmental justice considerations into the SEQRA environmental review process and Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) permitting. SB 8830 positions New York as one of the leading jurisdictions to incorporate environmental justice considerations and protection of “disadvantaged communities” into the environmental review and permitting processes.
